I recently read an article about why Walmart is considering removing self-checkout machines. As it turns out, one of the main reasons is because they’re losing huge money due to people using self-checkout lanes to steal merchandise. Recently, two Walmart stores, one in St. Louis, Missouri, and another in Cleveland, Ohio, got rid of their self-checkout machines.
This caught my interest. I decided to talk to an acquaintance of mine who works as a Walmart store manager. He says that they do have problems with people who exploit vulnerabilities in self-checkout lanes to steal all sorts of things. He also believes that self-checkouts won’t go away permanently. Walmart will likely fix the loopholes and relaunch a foolproof tech that will make stealing much harder. After all, self-checkouts were introduced to battle long wait times at checkout, especially during peak hours. Customers often grumbled about long wait times, and self-checkouts made everything faster.
I assume, some people would say that self-checkouts were primarily introduced not to make things easier for customers but to relieve Walmart and other stores of the burden of having to pay cashiers at the cash register. You install a self-check out, and voilà , no people, no additional costs. This also means no jobs and and no salary…
