I believe we’ve all had those moments. You know, when your to-do list seems endless, and it feels like you’re drowning in deadlines and decisions.

It’s so easy to get caught up in this cycle. Always trying to maintain control and order.

We put on our serious faces, trying to appear composed and capable as we keep pushing ahead.

But the thing is being too serious can actually work against us.

Think about it. Seriousness feels safe, like you’re in control, a master of your domain. It implies that you’re skilled and capable.

But guess what?

Life is a comedian. It has an endless supply of unexpected punchlines. There’s always something lurking around the corner. There’s always a twist in the plot that throws your carefully constructed plans into disarray.

That seriousness you cling to? It can feel like a shield, sure, but one that blocks out not just the bad stuff, the failures and disappointments, but also the awesome, surprising good stuff too.

But, don’t get me wrong, I take my work seriously. Building anything from the ground up takes focus, dedication, and a healthy dose of elbow grease. But I’ve also learned that the most successful people I know, the ones who consistently break barriers and achieve incredible things, share a surprising secret. They know how to laugh at themselves, to embrace a little bit of goofiness now and then.

Why?

Because playfulness isn’t some frivolous indulgence for the carefree. It’s a powerful tool that can unlock a whole new level of success. It helps you bond with your team more closely, creating a feeling of unity and trust that encourages coming up with new ideas and solving problems together.

A good laugh can break the tension in the most high-pressure meeting, allowing for out-of-the-box thinking and creative solutions.

Here’s a story.

Back in the early days, when Daniel’s (friend of mine) company was just a scrappy startup with more dreams than funding, he was pitching to a potential investor. It was a high-stakes meeting, and the pressure was on. Daniel had prepped for weeks. He polished his presentation to a shine. But then, right in the middle of his pitch, he tripped over his words … a classic brainfreeze moment. The room went silent, the tension was crackling in the air.

The “serious Daniel” would have panicked, stammered through an apology, and tried to salvage the situation. But that day, something different happened. My friend took a deep breath, looked at the investor, and simply said, “Wow, that was a spectacular brain fart. Can we rewind a few seconds?”

This made the whole room laugh, and the tension dissipating like fog in the morning sun. Daniel managed to right the ship, finish the presentation, and sure, his startup landed the investment.

That moment teaches a valuable lesson: vulnerability and humor are not weaknesses. They’re strengths. They allow you to connect with people on a human level, to build rapport and trust. Trust is the bedrock of any successful team or business relationship.

But the benefits of letting loose go beyond just the boardroom.

The truth is seriousness can be a creativity killer. When you’re constantly focused on maintaining a certain image, on projecting this air of control, you stifle the free-flowing ideas that lead to innovation and breakthroughs.

Children can teach us a lesson … a child doesn’t face the world with a serious expression all the time. They approach it with wide-eyed wonder, a willingness to experiment, and a complete lack of self-consciousness when it comes to trying new things. They’re not afraid to make mistakes, to look silly, to explore the world with unbridled curiosity. It’s where some of the most brilliant ideas come from.

So, how do we tap into that inner child, that playful, curious spark that can lead to greater success? Here are a few tips…

Embrace the power of “what if?” Don’t be afraid to ask silly questions, to explore unconventional ideas. Some of the most groundbreaking innovations started as someone saying, “What if we tried this crazy thing?”

Step outside your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to do something new every week, even if it feels a little scary. Take an improv class, join a dance club, try your hand at stand-up comedy. You never know what hidden talents you might discover, or what connections you might make.

Don’t take yourself too seriously. Learn to laugh at yourself, your mistakes, and your occasional social blunders. Trust me, everyone makes them. In fact, embracing those moments can make you even more relatable and approachable.

Find your tribe. Surround yourself with people who appreciate your sense of humor and encourage you to be your authentic self. A supportive network will boost your confidence and make it easier to let loose.

Make time for play. It might sound counterintuitive, but scheduling time for activities you enjoy, whether it’s playing a sport, painting, or simply having a board game night with friends, can actually improve your productivity and focus. Play allows you to de-stress, recharge, and come back to your work with fresh eyes and renewed creativity.

As they say, life is a journey, not a destination. It’s about embracing the unexpected, the funny, and the downright weird. It’s about learning from your mistakes, picking yourself up with a laugh, and trying again.

Maybe it’s time to ditch the poker face and let yourself be surprised by the beauty and wonder that life throws your way. You might just find that a little less seriousness leads to a whole lot more success, and way more fun along the way.

Now, go and conquer the world. And don’t forget to laugh while you’re doing it.😊
