This man abandoned everything and followed his thoughts. Could this happen to you? To any of us? Is it possible that we reach a point where the lives we currently live are turned upside down?

Robert Dart was once successful.

He lived quite a stable and productive life. When he was a teenager, he served as co-captain of his high school’s football and track teams, as well as co-president of the academic club. He was smart and creative, he earned a collection of science fair prizes and literary awards. Dart’s early life was a series of triumphs. He was a driven individual.

He also wrote a few books…

Robert’s journey continued on an upward trajectory as he entered law school at the prestigious University of Chicago, where he met his future wife, a fellow classmate.

After graduation, Dart established himself as a successful lawyer in Southern California, a role that seemed to fulfill the promise of his earlier achievements. He had it all: a nice career, a loving family, and a bright future.

Then, at the age of 35…

Dart’s seemingly unassailable life began to show cracks at the age of 35. His marriage took a turn for the worse, sending Rob to a harrowing descent into mental health struggles.

The divorce, a deeply personal blow, triggered a psychosis that forced Dart to retreat to his childhood home for recovery. Under the care of doctors and his devoted mother, he sought solace among the trophies of his past achievements. For a time, therapy and medication offered a glimmer of hope, but…

… then the pandemic came…

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced unprecedented challenges. The cessation of therapy sessions and medication, coupled with the isolation of lockdowns, precipitated a devastating relapse. Dart’s condition deteriorated, leading him to a life of homelessness.

The contrast between his former self and his present condition was stark. He oscillated between lucidity and incoherence. The internal chaos gripped him. In moments of clarity, he could articulate himself with the precision of a skilled lawyer; in others, he was lost to gibberish and confusion.

Dart’s family watched helplessly as the man they knew and loved became a shadow of his former self. His sister Jennifer’s attempts to help him were met with resistance and anger.

During the pandemic, hospitals were overwhelmed, and the legal system offered little respite for those like Dart. These people were caught in the throes of mental illness without the means or will to seek help.

Despite the systemic challenges, Dart’s family persisted in their efforts to support him. California’s CARE Court system offered a ray of hope, a chance to compel Dart into treatment despite his reluctance.

His mother, Sherry, a retired first-grade teacher, exhausted her savings in an attempt to shield her son from the worst of his condition.

However, the systemic inadequacies of healthcare and legal support, left Rob vulnerable and isolated.

Mental health issues have a profound impact on individuals and their families. Addressing mental health struggles is a collective challenge that demands compassion, understanding, and systemic reforms to support those affected.

Today, Robert is among the estimated 75,000 homeless people in Los Angeles County.

For those who want to learn more…

Robert had a blog where he occasionally wrote short stories about his life.

His posts offer a glimpse into his relationship with his father and school colleagues. It seems his father was an unsusal character.

Interestingly, he started his blog at the end of 2012.

His first post had only two sentences:
“My name is Rob and I now blog. I don’t know what I’m going to do in this space, but I suspect it will get me in trouble.”

He would post brief stories regularly for over a year, until February 2014.

But then he stopped completely … until May 2020. After a pause of 6 years, Rob felt the need to post again.

Remember, May 2020 — the COVID pandemic was in full swing.

The pandemic affected everyone. And those with mental issues were not in focus…

UPDATE:

  • In late 2024, Dart admitted he needed help and agreed to take medication. His family arranged for his treatment at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena.
  • He initially sought to leave treatment but ultimately chose to receive medication and reconnect with his family.
  • In January 2025, after experiencing worsening conditions and Los Angeles fires, he decided to return to his childhood home in Vienna, Virginia. His mother helped him transition back.

He is now on medication, seeing a psychiatrist, attending church, reconnecting with his son and sister, and taking courses to reactivate his law license.

Dart is grateful for stability and considering writing a book, possibly a graphic novel about emotional healing. While uncertain about his future, he hopes for a happy ending.
